Embody Therapy
Hi, I’m Sophie Conklin, LCSW. I am a trauma therapist providing secure, HIPAA-compliant online therapy throughout Virginia for adults and teens navigating:
• Complex Life and Family Stressors
• Traumatic Experiences
• Sexual Trauma
• Abuse and Neglect
• Relationship Challenges
• Unwanted Behavioral or Thought Patterns
• Emotional Safety, Regulation, and Communication
Therapy offers a space to slow down, understand what you’re carrying, and begin working toward greater stability, safety, and connection.
Brief Overview
I am a trauma therapist who offers integrative, body-based therapy to support deeper healing, regulation, and reconnection after overwhelming or traumatic experiences. My work is rooted in a holistic, trauma-informed approach that honors the connection between mind and nervous system.
I recognize that trauma can impact how you feel in your body, relationships, and sense of self. Therapy is a space where we move forward at a pace that feels attuned to you.
My work draws from approaches such as EMDR therapy (Eye Movements, Desensitization, and Reprocessing Therapy), Parts Work (Internal Family Systems Therapy), Mindfulness, Polyvagal Theory, CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy), depending on what best supports your needs.
Areas of Focus
Healing doesn’t require a label. I provide therapy for adults and teens navigating a range of emotional, relational, and life experiences.
-
Sometimes, even as time passes, the effects of difficult experiences can still feel present in everyday life.
Whether from childhood or adulthood, a single event or repeated experiences, you may notice lingering thoughts, emotional patterns, or behaviors that weren’t there before.
This can include feeling on edge, shut down, or unsafe in your body, even when you’re trying to move forward. Trauma Therapy and EMDR treatment can support you in thoughtfully processing what you’ve been through, reducing triggers, and building a greater sense of safety and stability over time.
You may be navigating:
PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) or complex PTSD
childhood or adulthood trauma
physical, emotional, or narcissistic abuse
emotional neglect
negative beliefs about the world or yourself
avoidance of particular people, or interactions
feeling guarded or unsafe
people pleasing
difficulties with boundaries
feeling frozen
nightmares
intrusive or unwanted thoughts
-
Surviving sexual trauma or assault can have lasting effects on how you feel internally, your relationships, and your sense of safety. You may notice patterns of anxiety, disconnection, difficulty with trust, or feeling overwhelmed in ways that are hard to explain. Therapy offers a space where you can move at your own pace, with care and respect for your boundaries, as you process your experience and begin to reconnect with yourself.
You may be navigating:
past or recent experiences of sexual trauma or assault
difficulty feeling safe or present in your body
challenges with trust or vulnerability
emotional or physical shutdown responses
impacts on intimacy and relationships
avoidance of certain people, places, or experiences
feeling unable to set boundaries
hypersexuality
feeling out-of-body or detached from oneself
sharing traumatic history with a loved one
-
Anxiety, depression, and chronic stress can show up as constant worry, thought spirals, low energy, emotional heaviness, or feeling overwhelmed by everyday life. You may find yourself stuck in patterns that are hard to shift, despite already knowing what needs to change. Therapy for anxiety and trauma offers space to identify factors feeding the cycle, understand what’s underneath these experiences, and begin finding steadiness again.
You may be experiencing:
persistent stress and overthinking
depression or low motivation
suicidal ideation
chronic stress or burnout
life transitions or feeling “off track”
avoidance or difficulty moving forward
lack of interest in previous hobbies
difficulty engaging in goals or interests
unwanted cyclical thoughts
-
There may be moments where you respond to people or situations in ways that feel confusing, such as freezing, disconnecting, becoming overwhelmed, or reacting quickly in ways that feel hard to understand. These responses are often protective, even if they don’t feel helpful or no longer serve the direction you want to head in.
Trauma Therapy and EMDR therapy focus on working with your nervous system in a supportive way, helping you reconnect with yourself gradually and safely so you can have more choice in how you respond to your environment.
You may notice:
dissociation or feeling disconnected from your body or environment
emotional numbness or overwhelm
difficulty regulating emotions
patterns of avoidance
feeling out of sync with yourself or out of your body
tightness or unwanted sensations in the chest, throat, or stomach upon stressors
-
Relationships can feel complicated when past experiences have shaped how you connect with others. You might find yourself pulling away, feeling anxious in relationships, or unsure how to express your needs. Trauma-focused Therapy services can help you understand these patterns, strengthen communication, and build more secure and fulfilling connections.
You may be navigating:
strained or challenging relationships
not feeling secure within relationships
anxious or avoidant feelings that drive unwanted thoughts and behaviors
difficulty maintaining pacing or individuality
difficulty approaching healthy and direct communication
boundary setting challenges
emotional or sexual intimacy concerns
maintaining balance and consistency
-
You may be struggling to manage a range of life demands that affect your emotional energy, focus, relationships, or sense of self. Therapy services can offer support in building coping tools, increasing emotional steadiness, and helping you move through complex or overwhelming responsibilities with more clarity and self-understanding.
This may include:
support with attention, focus, and emotional regulation challenges related to ADHD traits (without formal ADHD treatment specialization)
caregiver stress and burnout, including supporting loved ones with severe mental or physical health conditions
LGBTQ+ affirming therapy, including support with identity exploration, gender-affirming care, and sexuality
self-esteem, identity development, and navigating life transitions
learning tools for emotional regulation, structure, and daily functioning
Below are some of the concerns I commonly support through trauma-informed therapy:
Therapy is a collaborative process shaped by your experience and what feels most relevant for you. To begin, we focus on understanding what has led you here and what you would like support with moving forward.
Together, we develop a sense of direction and a plan of care that provides structure while honoring your needs, priorities, and pace. Sessions are flexible and responsive and may go beyond traditional talk therapy. This can include exploring patterns, emotional responses, and nervous system experiences, as well as building practical tools and strategies that support grounding, regulation, and resilience both in and outside of sessions.
The therapy services I provide are holistic and integrative, and may draw from approaches such as EMDR therapy, parts work, mindfulness, polyvagal theory, cognitive behavioral therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy, depending on what feels best for you.
A free consult call to connect, discuss what’s bringing you in, explore your goals, and see if this feels aligned with your needs.
